Come and enjoy the authentic ambiance. The old bar area where 50 years ago Café de Doffer started has been transformed into Restaurant Smelt. Did you know that the bar has also been there for over 50 years and is now used as a table for groups? Our fondues are made from the best French, Dutch and of course Swiss cheeses straight from the ``Kaaskamer van Amsterdam``. These cheeses are personally and carefully selected and served with artisan bread and fresh seasonal vegetables. In addition, we serve surprising seasonal appetizers that perfectly complement the fondue. Take for example the charcuterie platter, our pickled vegetables or artichoke!

FIGHTING OVER 'THE NUN'
That last bit of crusty-cheese fondue that sticks to the hot caquelon (fondue pan) is what the Swiss call ``la religieuse,`` or ``the nun``. According to tradition, they tap an egg into the pan to better loosen the cheese from the pan. The cheesy scrambled egg is the ``grande finale`` of the evening. Try not to fight your table companions over that last bit of cheesy goodness...!
