Our Story

After a successful first winter in our location in the 9-streets, Restaurant Smelt will open the doors of its second location this coming winter; Westerpark! Restaurant Smelt Westerpark is the ideal place to enjoy steaming cheese fondues and wonderful wines next winter evenings, or a richly filled ``fonduetosti`` during a winter walk on the weekends.

Our restaurant

Step inside the coziest spot in Westerpark. Did you know that years ago, this location was used as a coffee roastery! If you look at the ceiling when standing in our restaurant you may still recognize small details. In this location we have two floors, where it is possible to come and eat with small or large groups. Again, our fondues are made from the best French, Dutch and Swiss cheeses from the “Kaaskamer of Amsterdam”, personally and carefully tasted and selected by our staff. We also serve fresh seasonal vegetables with bread from Bakkerij Mama and some surprising appetizers prior to the cheese fondue.

FIGHTING OVER 'THE NUN'

That last crunchy-residue cheese fondue that sticks to the hot caquelon (fondue pan) is what they call in Switzerland ``la religieuse,`` or ``the nun. According to tradition, they crack an egg in the pan to better loosen the cheese from the pan. This cheesy scrambled egg is the ``grande finale`` of the evening. Come fight for that last divine morsel....
