On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoons, you can also join us for lunch at Smelt. We serve our fondues, toasties, and now also the Smelt Cheese-fondue-burger. A burger dripping with cheese, a burger to melt away! And don’t think of a tasteless tiny slice of cheese on your burger when you think of Smelt, here we pour a pan of cheese fondue over your burger right on the spot.
For over a quarter of a century, they were neighbors. A brown literary café and a specialty cheese shop filled with cheese from floor to ceiling. Café De Doffer and De Kaaskamer van Amsterdam. Both are well-known landmarks in the city center. Since January 2022, these two establishments have merged into Restaurant Smelt. The world’s home for cheese fondue lovers.
Our fondues are made from the finest French, Dutch, and of course, Swiss cheeses from our neighbors, De Kaaskamer van Amsterdam. Each cheese is personally and carefully selected, melted, and served with artisanal bread and fresh seasonal vegetables.

Yes, we sell some of our fondues ready-made at De Kaaskamer van Amsterdam in De 9-Straatjes in Amsterdam.
At Restaurant Smelt, we cook with wines that have a low alcohol content (0.5%). During cooking, some of the alcohol evaporates, reducing the alcohol percentage even further. Our beer fondue(s) contain higher alcohol percentages and are therefore not suitable for pregnant women.
